thorns, crown of
- A crown pressed into the head of Jesus (Matt. 27:29). Briers and brambles were common and grew in thickets in Palestine, and could well have supplied the thorns. The acanthus wreath, together with the purple cloak, or cape, and a reed as a sceptre, was part of the soldiers' mockery, representing Jesus as a king.
